Random Number Generators for Cryptographic Applications (Part 1)

Werner Schindler (Bundesamt für Sicherheit in der Informationstechnik (BSI) - Bonn)

A large number of cryptographic protocols require random numbers, e.g. as challenges, session keys or signature parameters. Inappropriate random number generators may totally weaken cryptographic mechanisms that are principally strong. We formulate and motivate several general requirements for random number generators that shall be used for cryptographic applications. Main differences between deterministic and true random number generators are worked out, and examples are discussed (talk).
