Every few years, computer security has to include a new discipline. In fact, new technologies and new applications give birth to new threats and force us to invent new protection mechanisms or improve on the existing ones.
In the last decade, the focus of many researchers in security was to gain more confidence on their systems by defining the so-called security notions. They clearly state the level of security they want to achieve, the power that an adversary has and the theoretical assumption on which the system rests. Thus a system is said to be secure, not because nobody has broken it so far, but because it captures a high level of security in a powerful adversarial model under a reasonable assumption.
